Day 1 – Adelaide to Kangaroo Island
Early morning pick up from your Adelaide hotel (0600 - 0630) for a scenic coach trip through hills and farmland and along the coast to Cape Jervis. There you will connect with SeaLink's fast and comfortable ferry for the 45 minute cruise to Kangaroo Island to meet your special tour coach.
On arrival in Penneshaw you will be met by your experienced SeaLink tour guide
who will show you some of Kangaroo Island's special places. First stop is Jumbuck
Australiana, an opportunity to see sheep shearing and learn about the wool
industry all in a small and authentic original shearing shed.
From there we drive to Andermel for a look at the marron ponds (fresh water lobster) where these delicious crustaceans are farmed. You will see how they are grown and harvested and see marron in storage tanks. Andermel is also a winery and so a wine tasting is also included. Lunch is in the Andermel restaurant, your choice of two marron dishes served with white wine.
After a leisurely lunch we visit the Kelly Hill Caves for a Parks ranger guided tour of these limestone caves and then continue to Flinders Chase National Park, known for both wildlife and spectacular coastal formations. Last stop for the day is the Platypus Water Holes walk in the National Park. A series of ponds in the Rocky River are home to the very shy platypus so the easy walk provides an opportunity to look for platypus and spot some of the colourful Australian birds. It is now late in the afternoon as we walk back to the coach across Black Swamp, an area where kangaroos and wallabies feed in the evening.
Accommodation for the night is at the 4 star Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat, near the entrance to Flinders Chase National Park. Watch for the wallabies and possums as you go in for dinner, a two course a la carte meal served with Kangaroo Island wines. Remember to close your hotel room door while you are at dinner as the possums love to visit!
Day 2 – Kangaroo
Island to Adelaide
After continental breakfast we drive back into Flinders Chase National Park to visit Remarkable Rocks, a spectacular eroded granite rock formation and paradise for photographers. We stop at Weir's Cove to see the ruins of the old lighthouse store and see how they hauled supplies from sailing ships up the cliffs to the store. In winter watch for whales which sometimes pass along the coast here. At Admiral's Arch take the boardwalk into the Arch, another spectacular natural formation and home to a colony of playful fur seals.
After a brief stop at the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre, we drive back along the south coast road to Hanson Bay Sanctuary where we take a walk to look for koalas and other wildlife.
From there we drive to Vivonne Bay for a two course lunch served with Kangaroo Island wines and located in a natural bushland setting. Lunch is followed by a Birds of Prey free flight demonstration before we drive to the bay to see if the fishing fleet is in and to see what has been rated by one of Australia's leading Universities as Australia's best beach.
From Vivonne Bay it is a short drive to Little Sahara, an inland area of large white sand dunes, unusual in that the dunes are not coastal and are surrounded by dense bushland.
Another short drive brings us to Seal Bay Conservation Park where we have one
of the world's special experiences - a walk on the beach with your SeaLink
guide amongst a breeding colony of wild and rare Australian sealions.
From Seal Bay travel into Kingscote, the island's main town, where you will see the feeding of the wild pelicans and learn about these ancient birds. Then it is time to return to Adelaide and you tour ends at the airport or ferry terminal for evening travel back to your Adelaide hotel.
